Mr. Rost was born on June 30, 1947, at St. Benedict's Hospital in Wendell. He was raised in Wendell and graduated from Wendell High School in 1965. He served in the Army National Guard from 1969 to 1970, where he was dismissed with an honorable discharge due to a near fatal accident. Rodney married Vicki Behrens in 1967 and they gave birth to their only son, Cordy, in 1972.
Mr. Rost was a union pipefitter and welder by trade, and a member of UA Local 367 out of Anchorage. Most of his work was with UA Local 375 out of Fairbanks. After separating from Vicki, he established his home in Soldotna, where he most often worked on the North Slope as a pipeline welder. He also worked in other remote locations of Alaska, from the Panhandle of Alaska through the Aleutian Island chain and up to the Arctic Ocean and Bearing Sea, either running jobs or being called in as a technical welder.
From his early youth throughout life, he rarely passed up an opportunity to fish, especially for salmon.
"The outdoors is where Rodney loved to be. Whether it was fishing, hunting, artifact exploration or spending time with family, most activities were centered around the outdoors," his family said.
"Rodney will be remembered as a devoted father, trusted brother and loyal son. Many also will remember him as a dedicated co-worker, thrifty spender and always happy natured friend."
He is survived by his father and mother, Frank and Gwen of Wendell; brothers, Robert "Bob" (LaRita) of Pocatello, Idaho, Richard (Vallejo) of Gooding, Idaho, Jerry (Janette) of Mountain Home, Idaho, and George (Beverly) of Gooding; sisters, Mary (Glenn) of Fruitland, Idaho, and Lisa (Don) of Bozeman, Mont.; son, Cordy (Kim); grandsons, Cole and unborn child of Torrance, Calif.; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Personal contact can be established with Cordy Rost at 1910 W. 235th St. in Torrance, CA 90501 or by leaving a message at 262-8381.
