New dog classes set to start

The Kenai Kennel Club is offering classes at its facility in the C Plaza in Kenai. Classes include puppy kindergarten; basic, intermediate and advance obedience; and junior handling.

The club is planning two new classes in January. The Canine Good Citizen program consists of a six-week class in which students take their dogs through a series of situations designed to teach the dog to be under control, such as in a crowd of people and around other dogs. A test is given at the end of the session.

Those who pass may receive a certificate from the American Kennel Club, which sponsors the program. The class will start Jan. 9.

The club also will start a Rally class Jan. 7. Rally was created to promote a positive relationship between a dog and owner. The dog and handler follow a series of signs, each one asking the dog to demonstrate a maneuver, such as a circle, weaving through cones or a down command. Handlers must be able to maintain the dog on their left side.

To find out more or to sign up for classes, call the club at 335-2552.
