Searchers look for Bethel man missing on snow machine trip

BETHEL (AP) -- A man who was traveling to Bethel by snow machine last week is missing.

Pavilla Bayayak, 63, of Bethel was returning from Kwethluk late Saturday when his snow machine apparently fell through Kuskokwim River ice, according to Alaska State Troopers.

Peter Atchak, president of Bethel Search and Rescue, says Bayayak's snow machine tracks lead into an open pool of water about 7 miles upriver from Bethel.

Searchers from Bethel and four nearby villages planned to drag the pool of water Tuesday, working as quickly as possibly for fear the hole might close.
