North Peninsula chamber meeting canceled

The North Peninsula Chamber of Commerce will not meet today. The next regular meeting will be Jan. 4. For more information, call 283-4202.

Phillips offers high school scholarships

The Phillips Alaska scholarship program awards more than $74,000 in scholarships to Alaska high school seniors annually. The deadline to apply for the 2001 Phillips scholarships is Jan. 25. Applications are available from counselors at Alaska high schools or by calling Phillips Alaska at (907) 263-4329.

Firewood area open

The Funny River Road firewood area on the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge is now open for personal use firewood cutting. There also are a number of long, small-diameter, fire-killed spruce that would make good fence poles. Wood cutters must get a permit from the refuge office before heading into the woods. Chugach areas open to snowmachines

Two sections of the Chugach National Forest are open to snowmachines. In the Glacier Ranger District, Turnagain Pass along the Seward Highway from Bertha Creek north to Ingram Creek is open. In the Seward Ranger District, all areas are open.

Snowmachiners are cautioned to stay away from areas not covered by snow or ice.
