7-year-old North Backus and his 3.5-year-old sister Heleana take a ride in a one horse open sleigh.
It's not just your great grandmother who has nostalgic memories of holiday trips in a one horse open sleigh. For the last 12 years C&C Stables of Sterling have been making those sleigh ride memories for folks of all ages here in the local area. Last week Connie Davis and her partner and daughter Carley of C&C Stables were offering rides at Sweeny's in Soldotna in their custom one horse open sleigh behind King, probably the most photographed Clydesdale in Alaska.
Even though the weather this holiday season has been bouncing back and forth between snow and rain, C&C's sleigh has been unfettered by road conditions. Unlike the one horse open sleighs of great grand mom's day, C&C's sleigh has a customized feature that allows the sleigh to roll along on wheels as well as cut through wide and drifting snow, "Bill Green built this for us a couple of years ago, I just gave him a picture and he made it from scratch. The wheels are a great addition and make the rides much more quiet going over crunchy ice, but when we want we can lift the wheels and take off into an open field like we did last week for a special party," said Davis. C&C's sleigh has been hired for everything from parades and parties to romantic proposals. 7-year-old North and 3-and-a-half-year-old Heleana Backus were treated to a private tour behind King last week and think that it makes Christmas a whole lot more fun, "It's probably like the sleigh that Santa uses, but of course he uses reindeer that fly," said North. C&C Stables offers unique horse bound experiences year round, for more information call Connie or Carley at 262-5401.
