Community makes sure kids have a ball

The Boys and Girls Club 2005 fifth-sixth grade basketball league just wrapped up another action-packed, fun-filled season. Due to the help and support of our wonderful community, more than 200 fifth- and sixth-graders from all over the area were given the opportunity to be a part of a team, learn and improve their basketball skills, make friends and, most importantly, participate and have fun.

A big thank you to all who pitched in to help where and when needed. Special thanks to the awesome individuals who stepped up and volunteered to coach a team, who spent many, many hours working with the kids, who provided an excellent role model for our kids and who were another caring adult in our children’s lives: Pat Reilly, Jeff Mills, Glen Godfrey, Will Tieaskie, Nathan Bryd, Ted VanAntwerp, Judy Johnson, Kelly Reilly-Nelson, Chris Kennedy, Shannon Fitt, Peter Klauder, Dennis Leckwee, Tracy Silta, Ray Chumley, Kimberly Earll, Laura Pillifant, Kjersten Skjold, Dave Westerman, Scotty Litchfield, Mark Fitt, Diane Duncan, Rachel Herring, Amy O’Dell, Mark Fowler, Mark Merrill, Jeff Fox, John Wensley, Jason Hanley and Paul Ostrander.

Also, the Boys and Girls Club greatly appreciates the community-minded businesses that gave their financial assistance by sponsoring a team. Their support helps keep our fees down and our program quality up: Dr. Henry Krull at Kenai Peninsula Orthopedics; Carolyn Snowder at Snowder Chiropractic; Joanne and Carrol Martin at Diamond M Ranch B and B, Cabins, RV Park; Kandi Meyer at Auto Wash Express; Dr. Robert Bauder, dentistry; and Mike Navarre at Arby’s.

We are truly lucky to live in a place where people are so willing to get involved and give back to their community.
