Instead of staying home and tearing into presents for the holidays, the Soldotna High School girls basketball team, with a healthy number of supporters in tow, headed south and has been tearing into opponents at the 20th annual Aztec Holiday Classic in San Diego.
Through Saturday's pool competition, the Stars had compiled a 3-0 record against San Diego area teams. The Stars opened the tournament Thursday with a 61-53 overtime victory against Carlsbad. Soldotna followed that with a 78-29 win over Morse Friday, then defeated Southwest El Centro 77-19 Saturday.
Soldotna will play for the eight-team tournament championship Monday evening.
Against Carlsbad, Jennifer Senette led the Stars with 18 points while Rachel Besse tallied 16 and Hillary Zobeck netted 15. Erin Wolfe contributed eight points, Lauren Christensen scored three and Amy Breakfield scored two points.
Under the guidance of head coach Mark Tuter and assistant John Christensen, the Stars turned up the defense in Friday's and Saturday's games, playing a full-court pressure, trapping defense to create plenty of offense from turnovers.
Against Morse, Zobeck led the Stars with 20 points while Besse finished with 19. Senette scored eight, Christensen netted seven, Wolfe scored six and Jenna Syverson, Brittany Howard and Breakfield each scored five. Stacey Foster netted two points.
Against Southwest El Centro, Senette poured in 20 points while Besse scored 16. Breakfield struck for 10 points, Zobeck hit for nine, Howard scored six and Foster netted five. Syverson scored three and Wolfe contributed two for the Stars.
