Peninsula Fight Challenge is tonight
Theatre of Pain Productions is presenting the seventh show of its inaugural series when the Peninsula Fight Challenge takes place tonight at the Soldotna Sports Center.
Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and the program is slated to start at 7:30 p.m. Tickets can be bought at the door. Rob Couture, who runs the Kenai Peninsula Mixed Martial Arts Club and is the production manager for Theatre of Pain Productions, said this could be one of the best shows they’ve produced thus far.
“It’s going to be a great show,” he said. “The upper end of the fight card is all veterans.”
The main event will be a Super Fight featuring Kevin Barber, from The Wolfpack of Anchorage, against Dave Knight, of Team Gladiator out of Fairbanks.
“This is for who’s the baddest cat at 171,” Couture said. “This fight has been building for some time. They’ve been trying to get them matched up at a couple of different venues.”
Including the Super Fight, there will be nine matches featured at the event.

ROCK ISLAND, Illinois Junior offensive guard Jon Verhelst, a 2004 graduate of Soldotna High School, was named to the NCAA Division III All-America football team, according to a press release. Verhelst was a third-team pick by D3football.com.
Verhelst was a first team all-conference selection and was the best offensive lineman on a team that averaged 261.8 yards per game rushing, which was ninth best in NCAA Division III, the release stated.
In College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin action, the Vikings led the league with 1,971 yards on 392 attempts in seven games for an average of 281.6 yards per game; nearly 70 yards per game ahead of second place Wheaton’s average of 212.9. Verhelst has been a two-year starter. Earlier this month he was selected to the all-North Region team by D3football.com as a second-team choice. The son of Timothy and Mary Beth Verhelst of Anchorage, he is a business administration major at Augustana and was the lone Augustana player selected to the All-American team.
