Sports Brief: KCHS, SoHI girls lose in semifinals

Posted: Wednesday, December 29, 2010

The Kenai Central and Soldotna girls basketball teams lost semifinal games on Tuesday in the Clarke Cochrane Christmas Classic in Ketchikan, meaning they will square off today in the consolation bracket.

Kenai Central fell to Lake Stevens (Wash.) 62-35, while Soldotna lost to Sumner (Wash.) 64-44. The losses drop the Kardinals and Stars to the consolation bracket, where they conclude the tournament against each other at 2 p.m. today. The winner earns a third-place finish, while the loser settles for fifth.

In boys action, Kenai Central rebounded from a first-round defeat to beat Petersburg 54-49. AJ Hull scored 23 points and Colton Hayes added 17 to pace the Kardinals, who advance to face Philomath at 7:30 p.m. today in the contest for fourth and sixth place.

Kenai Central coach Ken Felchle said his squad logged a solid defensive effort after struggling a night earlier in a 56-40 loss against Anacortes (Wash.).

"It was a much better team effort," Felchle said.
