Mrs. Shortes was born March 31, 1927, in Tularosa, N.M. She moved to Alaska from Oregon in 1968. She lived in North Pole, Valdez and Sitka before moving to Soldotna in 1976. She owned and operated Central Peninsula Answering Service for 20 years until retiring in 2000.
Mrs. Shortes enjoyed growing flowers and reading.
"She was the dearest, sweetest mother and grandmother. Her loved was unconditional. We have lost the backbone of our family and our heroine. She will live in our hearts forever as the best part of who we are. Every beautiful flower we see will remind us of her. Her life threw her some curves, but she always met every problem head on. She was wonderful," her family said.
Mrs. Shortes is survived by her children, Jeannie Salinas of Laredo, Texas, John Shortes of Soldotna and Jane Shortes of Kasilof; grandchildren, Micah Robertson, Jeremy McGrane and wife, Christy, John McGrane and wife, Andrea, and Rebecca McGrane, all of Alaska, and Ruth Gallegos and Bobby Squint of Laredo; great-grandchildren, Brandon Gallegos of Laredo, Cheyenne and Seth McGrane, Brady and Tyler McGrane and Isaac and Abigail McGrane, all of Alaska, and Jacob McGrane of Idaho; great-great-grandson, Damien Gallegos of Laredo; and special friend and granddaughter-in-law, Jenny Robertson of Alaska.
