Area student's cheer squad ranked nationally
Autumn Thurmond of Soldotna is one of 25 students on Barton County Community College's cheer squad, which placed fourth among junior colleges nationally in the pre-rankings for competition in the NCA/NDA Collegiate National Championship, to be held in April at Daytona Beach, Fla. More than 164 teams were pre-ranked for the national event. Barton County Community College is in Great Bend, Kan.
Area students complete Air Force basic training
Eight Kenai Peninsula people recently graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio.
Air Force Airman 1st Class Stacey H. Sartain is the daughter of Robbin Szczesny of Soldotna and a 2002 graduate of Skyview High School.
Air National Guard Airman 1st Class Rawley J. Langvardt is the son of Brad Langvardt of Kenai and a 2000 graduate of Kenai Central High School.
Air Force Airman Ryan S. Broussard is the son of John Broussard of Nikiski and graduated from a home school program in 2001.
Air Force Airman 1st Class Johnathon J. Dalebout is the son of Joseph and Teresa Dalebout of Soldotna and a 2002 Skyview graduate.
Air Force Airman David J. Quelland is the son of Kathleen Quelland of Sterling and Robbie Quelland of Soldotna. He is a 2002 Skyview graduate.
Air Force Airman Rachel Myers is the daughter of Kevin Myers of Kenai and Debbie Myers of Anchorage. She graduated from Grace Christian High School in Anchorage in 2001.
Air Force Airman Charles J. Frady is the son of Deborah Phillips of Soldotna and a 2001 Skyview graduate.
Air Force Airman Robert A. Merchant is the son of Robert Merchant of Kenai and a 2002 Kenai graduate.
During the six-week training, the airmen studied the Air Force mission, organization and military customs and courtesies, performed drill and ceremony marches and received training in rifle marksmanship, field exercises and human relations.
They also earned credits toward an associate degree through the Community College of the Air Force.
Homer graduate completes Army basic training
Army National Guard Private Aren G. Callahanrecently graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson in Columbia, S.C.
During the nine-week training, he studied the Army mission and received instruction and practice in drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, physical fitness, basic first aid, human relations and the Army history, tradition and core values.
He is the son of John and Betty Callahan of Homer and a 2000 graduate of Homer High School.
Soldotna student graduates from college
Quinn G. Tracy of Soldotna graduated from the University of Northern Colorado in Greenley, Colo., on Dec. 14. He received a degree in geography.
