Posted: Friday, December 31, 2004

The Nikiski High School girls basketball team posted a big win on the opening day of the Anchorage Christian Schools/Pepsi Invitational tournament, defeating Eielson 58-29 Thursday in Anchorage.

Also at the ACS tournament, the Nikiski boys lost 80-41 to Valdez. Homer dropped a pair of games to Barrow as the boys lost a close one in overtime, 57-54, and the girls lost 66-52.

Sarah Herrin led the Nikiski girls with 20 points and Hannah Thompson chipped in with 15. The Bulldogs also got the job done on defense, holding the Ravens scoreless in the second quarter.

The Bulldogs led 30-10 at the half and were able to keep Eielson in check without fouling - Nikiski was whistled for just seven infractions in the game.

Travis McGahan scored 14 points and Chris Curren netted 11 for the Nikiski boys, but the Bulldogs were overwhelmed by a powerful Valdez squad.

Adam Kuchin led all scorers with 21 points for the Buccaneers, including a 7-for-7 performance from the foul line.

The Homer boys were tied at 21 with Barrow at the half and led by four, 38-34, entering the fourth quarter. Barrow was able to tie the game up, though, and outscored Homer 8-5 in the extra period.

Jamey Smith led the Mariners with 15 points, Luke Gilbert scored 14 and Justin Smith chipped in with 11.

Fritz Frier scored 14 points to lead the Whalers.

The Homer girls fell behind early and couldn't make up the deficit against the Whalers. Allison Horazdovsky paced the Mariners with 14 points, Kayla Creamer scored 13 and Reba Temple netted 12 points.

Barrow got 22 points from Maria Eduarte.

Tournament play continues today and concludes Saturday.
