Fire department out to avoid being burned by the berms
After big snowfalls in Kenai, the fire department has a lot more than just its own driveway to worry about. In the Kenai Fire Department area, firefighters have approximately 500 fire hydrants to keep shoveled free of snow in the winter, which is no small task for a department that must always be ready to respond to an emergency.

JoAnn Christopher
Former Kenai resident JoAnn Christopher of Weatherford, Texas, died Saturday, Dec. 16, 2006, in a Fort Worth, Texas hospital. She was 66.

Clara ‘Rachel’ Gibson
Longtime Alaska resident and pioneer Clara “Rachel” Gibson died Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2006, at her winter home in Fort Mohave, Ariz. She was 73.

The good, the bad and the dirty
It’s hard to believe it’s already 2007, but 2006 is hours away from being in the history books.

Resolute against change
Here we are, Dec. 31, and it’s that time of year to once again procrastinate, (I mean consider) picking the pine needles out of the carpet, untangle and store those lights and Christmas ornaments, write thank-you notes to grandma, and (groan) fess up to friends and family what this year’s resolution is going to be.

My best friend
Mark Anderson’s golden retriever Cayenne keeps one foot on the equipment as she runs an agility course in Soldotna last summer. Working as a team, they have earned their beginning (Novice) titles and are working on their intermediate (Open) ones. When she’s not running a course, Cayenne keeps busy chasing squeaky balls and annoying her three siblings. Anderson lives in Kenai.

Year provides numerous reasons to stand up, cheer
