Kardinals take 3rd: Kenai girls edge SoHi in final minute

Posted: Friday, December 31, 2010

The Kenai Central girls basketball team took third place at the Clarke Cochrane Christmas Classic in Ketchikan on Thursday by defeating Soldotna 50-49.

The Stars entered the final minute with a 47-45 lead, and two free throws by Kelci Benson stretched the lead to 49-45.

The Kardinals fought back with a 3-pointer by Stevie Dunlap with 30 seconds left. After Soldotna could not connect on the front end of a bonus, Kenai's Morgan Wensley drew a foul and cashed in both foul shots to put the Kards up, 50-49. Soldotna missed a shot as the buzzer sounded.

The Kardinals jumped out of the gate quickly, taking a 21-9 lead after one quarter. The reason for Kenai's quick start was outside shooting. The Kardinals were 4-of-4 from 3-point land in the quarter, including three 3s in a row from Dunlap.

The Stars came all the way back to tie the game at 29 in the second quarter, but the Kardinals scored the final six points of the half and hit the locker room with a 35-29 lead.
