Granger Nyboer of Soldotna earned a Master of Arts – Special Education degree from the the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, Colorado, during fall 2015 graduation ceremonies Dec. 11-12.
Students in grades 6-8 recently had the opportunity to participate in the Patriot’s Pen Essay Program sponsored locally by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Jerry V. Horn Post 10046 and its Auxiliary on the topic “What Freedom Means to Me.”
Gavin Brennan, a seventh-grader at Aurora Borealis Charter School, was the first-place winner. He was awarded $500 and his essay has been forwarded to the state-wide competition. Alissa Maw, an eighth-grader at Aurora, was awarded second place and received $250.
Students in grades 9-12 had the opportunity to participate in the Voice of Democracy Program.
Paul Steffensen, and 11th-grader with Connections, won first place. He was awarded $1,000 from the VFW post, and his entry was forwarded to the state competition. The second-place winner was Shania Johnson, an 11-grader at Cook Inlet Academy. She received $500.
Additional awards will be made at the state level, with the first-place winner receiving an all expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C.
Kyla Davis of Soldotna is a fall graduate of the University of Alaska Anchorage Class of 2015. She received an Associate of Applied Science degree in Nursing during a celebratory ceremony at the Alaska Airlines Center in Anchorage on Dec. 13.
