Minister’s Message: Let’s get ready to …

The word, “fight,” usually conjures up aggression and conflict in a negative way.

“Let’s Get Ready to Rumble” is a battle cry made popular by ringside announcer Michael Buffer that generates excitement and focuses a crowd’s attention before boxing events. Since 1995 his trademarked phrase has garnered him an estimated $400 to $500 million dollars in profit just to use this phrase.

In the Bible, Paul’s words to young charge Timothy did not make him any money, but instead spread priceless encouragement throughout the ages for all followers of Jesus. Paul wrote, “Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses.” (1 Timothy 6:12).

The word, “fight,” usually conjures up aggression and conflict in a negative way, but in the positive sense it embodies courage, resilience and support. In Paul’s letter to Timothy he emphasizes in chapter 6 the call to stay in the faith. Timothy’s call to “fight” means that he needs to struggle through with great exertion and persevere against the godless chatter and false knowledge that was in opposition to godliness and sound teaching.

The phrase “good fight” signifies that this struggle is meaningful and valuable. “The faith” is a description of a personal trust and reliance on God which is celebrated in the future fulfillment of God’s purposes and the hope of eternal life.

Paul then reminds Timothy to remember these truths and not to forget the people who witnessed his public declaration of faith in Jesus. Paul’s words encouraged Timothy by supporting his calling as a leader, pointing to heavenly rewards, and expressing confidence in his ability to persevere. They served as both reassurance and inspiration for Timothy to remain faithful and courageous in his ministry.

While this challenge was given to Timothy, it also resonates with all followers of Jesus. The Christian life is indeed like a struggle or race, requiring discipline, intentionality, and a deep sense of purpose to maintain faith and godliness.

Thankfully, believers are not left to their own strength — God’s Spirit empowers us to resist temptation, overcome doubt, and endure even the toughest trials. Life’s struggles often reveal the battle within, but they also point us to the hope we have in God. God’s love and forgiveness is available to anyone who calls on Jesus’ name and trusts in him with their life.

For those who need to be reminded of God’s presence and availability in the hardest fight for life — let this be your encouragement: to stand firm, live boldly, and embrace the call to “fight the good fight of faith,” trusting that God is with you every step of the way.

“Let’s get ready to fight the good fight of faith!”
