Denali National Park is one of three iconic national parks (Grand Teton and Yosemite are the other two) which have begun a Zero Landfill Initiative. These three parks collectively generated 16.6 million pounds of visitor waste in 2013. Of that waste, 41 percent was kept out landfills through recycling, composting and reusing. By the end of 2017, Denali National Park and its partners, who have dubbed the program “Don’t Feed the Landfills,” hope to double the amount of waste that they are diverting from entering landfills.
Information provided by ReGroup, a nonprofit educational group, formed in 1989 to develop public awareness of waste reduction, reuse, and recycling benefits on Alaska’s Kenai Peninsula. ReGroup meets September through May, every third Monday of the month at 6:30 p.m. at Hope Community Center on Princeton Avenue off Kalifornsky Beach Road.
