Triumvirate Theatre comes alive with ‘The Sound of Music’

The stage adaptation of the 1960s Julie Andrews film opens Friday

The Triumvirate Theatre will open its next production, “The Sound of Music,” this weekend with shows at the Soldotna High School on Aug. 9, 10 and Aug. 16, 17.

“The Sound of Music” is a stage adaptation of the 1960s Julie Andrews film, following Maria as she becomes a governess in the strict household of Captain Von Trapp. She reintroduces music to soften a grieving family.

During a rehearsal on Friday, Aug. 2, Nettie Keller could be seen as Maria — surrounded by a pack of young actors as the seven Von Trapp children. Under the watchful eye of director Joe Rizzo, the actors together performed several familiar tunes, like “Do, Re, Mi.” Many of the songs in the show are dense and complex, often requiring the actors to weave their parts around one another or sing countermelodies against the others onstage.

The Triumvirate Theatre’s Facebook page has repeatedly espoused the “tremendously talented” cast, who endured late nights to lock down the lyrical demands and put on “a great show.” They even held a rehearsal on the foundation of the under-construction new Triumvirate Theatre location in Kenai — on concrete slabs where seats will soon be, without walls or a roof.

“The Sound of Music” will run at Soldotna High School this weekend and next. Shows are at 7 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, Aug. 9, 10 and Aug. 16, 17. Tickets can be purchased at triumviratetheatre.org.
