One man died and two others were hospitalized in a motor vehicle collision Tuesday outside Soldotna on the Sterling Highway.
The Alaska State Troopers and Central Emergency Services responded at approximately 7 p.m. to multiple reports of a crash on the Sterling Highway at Mile 99.5 — just past Skyview Middle School and the Central Peninsula Landfill headed out of town, according to a trooper dispatch.
Responders found that Sam Clyde, a 36-year-old man from Soldotna, was driving a 2000 Volkswagen Beetle southbound away from Soldotna when he struck an adult cow moose. His vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic where it then collided with a 2013 Ford Edge, according to the dispatch.
Clyde was pronounced dead at the scene. The two occupants of the Edge, who were not identified in the dispatch, were brought to Central Peninsula Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The collision closed the Sterling Highway for around two hours, with travelers directed to detour via Echo Lake Road or Kalifornsky Beach Road.
