Accident in Turnagain Pass sends 4 to hospital

A car accident in Turnagain Pass on Wednesday sent four people to the hospital in Anchorage with serious injuries.

Alaska State Troopers and first responders had to extricate four people from two cars after a head-on collision at approximately mile 74.5 of the Seward Highway on Wednesday. Troopers responded to the call around 12:39 p.m., according to an online dispatch.

Randahl Sadler, 67, of Kenai, was driving a 2007 Dodge pickup southbound when he spun out of control on the icy road, slid into the oncoming lane, hit the guardrail and then collided with a northbound 2000 Nissan Altima driven by Todd McCabe, 22, of Anchorage, according to the dispatch.

“Both occupants in each vehicle were entrapped and sustained serious injuries which required extrication,” the dispatch states.

All four people were taken to Providence Alaska Medical Center for treatment, three by ground transport and one by helicopter, according to the dispatch. Both vehicles were totaled.

Sadler was cited for failure to exercise due caution to avoid a collision, and his passenger was cited for failure to wear a seatbelt, according to the dispatch.

Road conditions in the Turnagain Pass were slick with the potential for black ice Thursday morning, according to the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities’s Alaska 511. The roads in the Kenai area had an icy glaze Thursday around midday and Alaska 511 recommended reducing speed and driving with headlights on.
