The Kenai Peninsula Borough will enter a contract with Anchorage-based Far North Services for abatement of asbestos flooring in three central peninsula schools, after approval of the move by the borough assembly on Tuesday.
A memo by borough Maintenance Foreman Jake Lautaret, included in meeting documents, says bids were solicited through much of April for a project that would remove around 5,350 square feet of vinyl asbestos floor tile, asbestos sheet vinyl and asbestos mastic from “three different schools.”
The borough mayor’s office said Thursday that those three schools are Kenai Central High School, Kenai Alternative High School and Sterling Elementary School.
By the deadline, five bids were received — all from Anchorage-based contractors — and the low bid of $93,000 by Far North was selected.
During the assembly’s Policies and Procedures Committee meeting on Tuesday, when the contract was up for discussion, no members of the assembly commented or asked questions about the project.
