Construction pauses for Memorial Day

Memorial Day travelers on the Kenai Peninsula won’t have to worry about construction traffic delays.

The work on the major construction projects around the central Kenai Peninsula paused for the Memorial Day holiday weekend, according to Alaska 511. Work will resume Tuesday.

That includes the Sterling Highway widening project east of Sterling, the left turn lane construction at Forest Lane on the Sterling Highway east of Soldotna and the repaving work on Kalifornsky Beach Road between Soldotna and Bridge Access Road. All the projects include flagging operations, pilot cars and traffic delays.

The Sterling Highway rehabilitation project, stretching between Sterling and the western entrance of Skilak Lake Loop Road, includes resurfacing, adding passing lanes and widening shoulders as well as a pedestrian access for the Skyline Trail beneath the road, replacing a culvert at the East Fork of the Moose River with a wildlife underpass bridge and the addition of a wildlife crossing culvert. Traffic is currently being diverted onto a detour lane for the wildlife culvert through June 8, where the speed limit is 25 miles per hour, according to Alaska 511.

Starting Tuesday, drivers should expect lane closures, one-lane traffic and flagging operations Monday through Sunday from 8 p.m. through 8 a.m. Paving will begin June 11, and drivers should expect 15¬–20 minute delays, according to Alaska 511.

The Kalifornsky Beach Road project will see reduced traffic lanes, pilot car operations and short delays after 8 p.m., according to Alaska 511. The project will add traffic signals at the intersections with Gaswell Road and Ciechanski Road as well as resurfacing and repainting the road.
