The Alaska Division of Forestry is asking residents in the Southcentral and Interior regions to avoid burning, both in open debris fires and burn barrels, until Tuesday.
A combination of high winds, no snow cover and dry conditions make it dangerous to burn at the moment, according to a Saturday press release from the Division of Forestry. The request is not a burn ban, but rather a warning. The National Weather Service has predicted north winds up to 25 miles per hour on the Kenai for Sunday and up to 20 miles per hour Monday.
“Please use extreme caution with any activity that could ignite a wildfire,” the release states.
The Division of Forestry is currently battling a late-season wildfire in the Mat-Su Valley near Sutton.
