The Kenai Peninsula Food Bank on Tuesday extended their annual Adopt-A-Turkey fundraiser through the end of the year, as the goal of raising money to provide 1,200 turkeys to those in need hasn’t been hit.
Kenai Peninsula Food Bank Office Manager Claire Jones told the Clarion last month that the fundraiser calls for $25 dollar donations to “adopt” a turkey. That’s because the food bank can purchase turkeys at a bulk rate for less than a person could buy a turkey to donate themselves.
On Nov. 25, the food bank posted to Facebook that they were “only about halfway” to a goal of funding 1,200 turkeys. That’s despite an early infusion of funds for 400 turkeys by Marathon Petroleum at the start of November.
Jones said the food bank works each holiday season to distribute turkeys across the peninsula, collaborating with other food pantries and churches to get the birds to tables.
Donations for the fundraiser will now be open through Dec. 31. They can be made on the Kenai Peninsula Food Bank website, through a link or QR code on the “Kenai Peninsula Food Bank” Facebook page, or in person at the food bank.
