Helen Dick looks on at Joel Isaak’s moose skin as the two begin tanning a moosehide in the Raven Plaza outside of the Dena’ina Wellness Center in Kenai on Wednesday.
In the early stages of the traditional tanning process, the pair are scraping the meat and fat from the skin in a technique known as fleshing. Isaak said that scraping process could take upward of 16 hours to complete.
“It’s basically just a lot of hard labor,” Isaak said.
The tanning process will continue Thursday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and then Isaak will finish the process from Oct. 23–27. (Photo by Kat Sorensen/Peninsula Clarion)
