Kenai’s Sarah Jane Baisden and Soldotna’s Lydia Schwartz and Isaac Winslow are included in a list of Alaska nominees to U.S. Military Service Academies published this month by U.S. Sens. Dan Sullivan and Lisa Murkowski.
Baisden is nominated to the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, by both Sullivan and Murkowski; also to the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado, by Sullivan.
Schwartz is nominated to the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, New York, and the U.S. Naval Academy by both legislators.
Winslow is nominated to the U.S. Naval Academy by Murkowski.
Though a congressional nomination “is an accomplishment within itself,” Murkowski’s release says, admission is not guaranteed. Instead, the students will compete with other candidates for a spot at the school they have been nominated for. Both senators nominated dozens of Alaskans from around the state to join the class of 2029.
“These young Alaskans have shown exemplary leadership and dedication to their communities, and it is an honor to nominate them to our nation’s military service academies,” said Sen. Murkowski. “I extend my congratulations and best wishes to each of them.”
“It is a highlight of my job to nominate young Alaskans to our nation’s prestigious military service academies,” said Sen. Sullivan. “These students, from across Alaska and with diverse backgrounds, show the incredible ways our young people are involved in our communities, schools, churches, and homes. They are not only hard workers, but well-rounded, caring individuals who have a desire to serve others.
