Sen. Lisa Murkowski’s campaign updated its filing paperwork on Thursday, making the lawmaker eligible to continue fundraising.
Campaign Consultant Kevin Sweeney said Friday that updating the paperwork does not guarantee that Murkowski will run for reelection to the U.S. Senate in 2022, but rather allows Murkowski to continue fundraising for herself and for other Senate candidates on a joint fundraising committee.
Sweeney described the move as the campaign “expanding fundraising opportunities,” but said Murkowski will not actually enter the race until she files with the State of Alaska.
Murkowski has not yet stated whether or not she intends to run for reelection in 2022. She faces an early challenger in Kelly Tshibaka, the former commissioner of the Alaska Department of Administration. Tshibaka resigned as commissioner to challenge Murkowski in 2022 and has already started campaigning, including at multiple events on the Kenai Peninsula.
Both candidates have reported financial support from residents of the Kenai Peninsula Borough, according to campaign finance data reported by the Federal Election Commission.
