An 87-year-old Ninilchik resident died Tuesday evening when an ATV she was operating was struck by a pickup truck, Alaska State Troopers said Thursday.

According to a dispatch from troopers, Birch Allen was attempting to cross the Sterling Highway from Oil Well Road around 6 p.m. on Tuesday when she was struck by a pickup truck turning from the road onto the Sterling Highway. Troopers responded and brought Allen to “a Kenai Peninsula area hospital,” but they say she succumbed to her injuries.

No other injuries were reported, and a citation was issued to the driver of the pickup truck for failure to exercise due care. The investigation is ongoing.
