After making a trot through the neighborhood, a caribou stops to munch on some fresh greens near Kenai Central High School on Saturday, Aug. 13, 2016 in Kenai, Alaska. Caribou, which are called reindeer in Europe, are the only deer species in which both sexes grow antlers, though the antlers on males are larger and more massive than those on females. Males will shed the velvet on their antlers in late August and early September in anticipation of the breeding season and the start of fall migration, according to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.
