A moose grazes on a lawn in a neighborhood on Cannery Road near the Kenai River’s south beach Friday in Kenai. Moose can be hard to see as the days grow darker in the winter, and deep snow in the woods can lead them to the roads, where it’s easier to walk and they may find food, according to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. On the Kenai Peninsula, about 250 moose are hit by cars every year, according to Fish and Game. The department recommends slowing down, keeping greater distance between cars, cleaning windshields and headlights, being aware of where moose are usually seen, looking for signs of moose crossings and watching for additional animals crossing the road to avoid collisions.
