A Seward woman is dead and law enforcement are searching for a “person of interest” following a shooting in Seward early Wednesday morning, according to Alaska State Troopers.
A Wednesday dispatch from troopers says that they, alongside Seward Police Department, responded to a report that a woman was unconscious “after potentially being shot.” Troopers detained two men while providing emergency care to the woman, 51-year-old Billie Cubley, who died later that day at a hospital in Seward.
Danny Lowry Jr., 55, was one of the two men detained, and troopers took a gun from him when they arrived. He fled on foot while troopers and police were providing care to Cubley. A search involving two SWAT teams and Kenai Peninsula-area law enforcement was “exhaustive,” but “unsuccessful.”
Troopers said in a dispatch published around 5 p.m. on Wednesday that the SWAT teams were demobilized but that local law enforcement would continue to search for Lowry.
Seward Police Department Chief Alan Nickell said Monday that his department “isn’t taking an active role” in the search, but remain vigilant to information that may aid the trooper’s ongoing investigation. He said the troopers want to contact Lowry for an interview.
Though Lowry fled, the dispatch says that findings of the Alaska Bureau of Investigation do not indicate murder and “it is unclear why Lowry fled the scene.” Troopers requested a warrant for fourth-degree escape, the dispatch says, and investigation is ongoing.
