A school closure announcement from the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District was issued Monday, Dec. 6, 2021.

Schools closed for Tuesday in Homer, Anchor Point

Central peninsula schools are still planned to open.

Because of a continuing winter storm that started Sunday night, Kenai Peninsula School District schools in the Homer and Anchor Point area will be closed on Tuesday, Dec. 7, according to a notice from the school district on Monday evening.

The affected schools are Chapman School, Connections Homeschool (Homer), Fireweed Academy, Homer Flex School, Homer High School, Homer Middle School, Kachemak Selo School, McNeil Canyon Elementary School, Nikolaevsk School, Paul Banks Elementary School, Razdolna School, Voznesenka School and West Homer Elementary School.

Remaining open on a normal schedule are Nanwalek, Ninilchik, Port Graham and Susan B. English schools.

Homer and Anchor Point area schools closed early on Monday because of the storm.

Moose Pass School, Seward Elementary School, Seward High School and Seward Middle School will open with a two-hour delay on Tuesday. Announcements about any full closure warranted by weather or road conditions will be made by 7 a.m.

A two-hour delay means that morning buses run two hours later than normal, school begins two hours later than normal, and pre-K sessions are canceled. The school day ends at the normal time.

Cooper Landing and Hope schools will operate on a normal schedule.

Central peninsula schools in the Kasilof, Kenai, Nikiski, Ninilchik, Soldotna, and Sterling areas are slated to open on a normal schedule. If road conditions deteriorate overnight, a delay start or closure will be announced by about 5:30 a.m. If there is not an announcement, school is open on a normal schedule.

According to the National Weather Service, a winter storm warning remains in effect until 8 a.m. Tuesday south of Clam Gulch. Heavy snow and blowing snow are expected, with additional accumulations of 6 to 10 inches along with southeast winds gusting to 35 mph on Monday evening.

Worst conditions are expected along the Homer Bluff, Diamond Ridge and the hills north of Homer. Heavy snow will resume overnight. Expect more blowing snow as winds shift to westerly and temperatures cool Tuesday morning.
