A collision Friday evening on the Kenai Spur Highway left a 23-year-old Soldotna resident dead.
Alaska State Troopers said in a dispatch published that night that David Baldwin II was driving a 1997 Ford Explorer around Mile 21 of the Kenai Spur Highway, by the Kenai Refinery in Nikiski, when he attempted to pass a dump truck in a no-passing zone. Oncoming in the other lane was a Subaru.
Baldwin attempted to pull back in behind the dump truck but struck its rear tires and rolled into the other lane, according to the dispatch, where his vehicle struck the Subaru.
Baldwin was found dead on scene. The dispatch says three occupants of the Subaru were transported to Central Peninsula Hospital for “non-life-threatening injuries.” The driver of the dump truck was uninjured. The Kenai Spur Highway was closed, the dispatch says, for around four hours.
