A return to colder temperatures and strong wind chills are forecast by the National Weather Service “through at least Friday,” a special weather statement says.
The statement, issued around 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, warns of “an arctic airmass and gusty northerly winds,” expected to move into Southcentral Alaska on Tuesday evening.
Areas described in the message as likely to see high winds and low-temperature wind chills include Kenai, Soldotna, Homer, Cooper Landing and Seward.
Wind chills over night may reach as low as -20 to -40 degrees in “much of Southcentral.”
The service’s forecast for Kenai indicates that temperatures are expected to start dropping below zero degrees at night again, with -8 degrees forecast on Thursday.
A forecast discussion published by the service says blowing snow may be another result of the passing weather system.
