A small ultra-light plane crashed in Nikiski on Thursday due to engine trouble.
Pilot Aaron Smith of Nikiski was attempting to take off from an airstrip in an experimental plane he had been working on. Though he got off the ground, shortly after takeoff, his engine died, said Department of Public Safety Public Information Officer Megan Peters.
The plane crashed into the trees at mile 4 of Holt Lamplight Road, approximately 100 feet away from the road, at 3:26 p.m. Thursday, Peters said in an email. Another person picked him up and took him home, she said.
“Smith didn’t obtain any injuries from the crash,” Peters said.
Smith will return to pick up his aircraft, but the investigation has been closed, she said.
