The National Weather Service will conduct a statewide test of the tsunami warning system Wednesday morning.
Sirens may be heard in Port Graham, Nanwalek, Homer, Seldovia, Lowell Point and Seward, according to the Kenai Peninsula Borough Office of Emergency Management.
According to a release from the office, the test is scheduled for 10:15 a.m., and will be carried out via the Emergency Alert System on radio and television. The audio and visual broadcast will include language identifying the test.
The Kenai Peninsula Borough siren system is automatically activated through the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Weather Radio, the release says. That weather radio is planned to be used during the test. This may trigger sirens in local communities, but the office will manually override the test and release an all-clear notification in that event.
Regular tests are done to test the system “end-to-end” and ensure it is operational when a tsunami warning is issued, the release says.
