Whittier tunnel closed due to rock fall

The Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel, also known as the Whittier Tunnel, is closed until further notice due to a rock fall hazard inside the tunnel, according to the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities. The tunnel was closed at 1 p.m. Tuesday.

According to a DOT press release, personnel have removed the fallen rock and are currently evaluating the condition of existing rock inside the tunnel.

Updates and additional information may be found online at tunnel.alaska.gov. State maintained road conditions and road closures can also be found online at 511.alaska.gov.

The 2.5-mile tunnel connects Whittier with Portage and the Seward Highway.
