Capitol Corner: Serving Alaskans: How my office can help you

Rep. Justin Ruffridge reports back from Juneau.

Legislators live and work in Juneau from January through May each year. Their primary and constitutionally mandated task is to create and pass a State budget. Legislators may also introduce their own legislation, offer amendments to other legislative bills, and meet with constituents and stakeholders from across the state on issues of importance to groups, communities, and boroughs.

Legislators are elected to serve residents, and that service comes in many forms. One of the biggest joys I have is helping my constituents navigate the various levels of bureaucracy within our state departments. There is nothing more fulfilling than helping my constituents reach a successful conclusion to their issue.

If you have been maneuvering through state agencies and programs and cannot reach a solution in a timely manner, please call my office, and let’s see if we can help you. Some of the areas where my office has already helped constituents include: Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) application or delays receiving benefits; delays or loss of benefits with Medicaid/Medicare; issues or questions with your Permanent Fund Dividend (PFD) application or status; Child Support or Office of Children’s Services (OCS) assistance, and road/snow removal issues.

In addition to assisting constituents with these issues, another important role as a legislator is empowering constituents with more knowledge about the legislative process. As a constituent, there are many resources available that can help you become more engaged in the legislative process. My office sends out a weekly newsletter with updates from Juneau, local news and useful online resources to help you navigate the legislative process. Follow this link to view my Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/repruffridge, where you can sign up for future newsletters and view previous editions.

I encourage you to contact my office if you are facing state-related issues and cannot reach a timely resolution. We are here to assist in any way we can. You can reach my office via email at Rep.Justin.Ruffridge@akleg.gov or by phone at 907-465-2693.

Public service is much more than just passing legislation; it’s about ensuring Alaskans have access to the necessary resources and support. My team and I are honored to serve you, and we look forward to helping however we can.
