Aklestad, Johnson lead Iron Dog

Palmer’s Tyler Aklestad and Eagle River’s Tyson Johnson led the Iron Dog as of Monday night.

Aklestad and Johnson pulled over in Kaltag to take their eight-hour layover at 5:35 p.m. The Wasilla duo of Todd Minnick and Nick Olstad were in second, arriving at 5:53 p.m. in Kaltag.

Kasilof’s Dusty VanMeter and Wasilla’s Chad Gueco were in sixth place. The duo was taking their layover in Galena, which is 98 miles from Kaltag. VanMeter and Gueco arrived in Galena at 5:27 p.m.

Cory Davis of Soldotna and Ryan Simons of Camrose, Alberta, were in 17th place. They were taking their layover in Ruby, which is 52 miles from Galena. That pair arrived there at 4:14 p.m.

From Kaltag, it is just 362 miles to get to Nome, where the racers will rest for a day.
