Area skiers set for region meet

Last year, a 19-year string of at least one peninsula team winning a Region III team championship was broken when the Palmer girls and Colony boys took victories.

Peninsula teams will look to start a new streak at the Region III Nordic Ski Championships at the Government Peak Recreation Area today and Saturday.

Today’s competition will be a 5-kilometer freestyle done in the interval start format. The girls varsity race is at noon, while the boys varsity race is at 12:30 p.m.

Saturday will be a mass start in the classic technique, with position in the mass start based on today’s results.

The boys will race 7.5 kilometers at 11 a.m., while the girls will race 5 kilometers at 11:45 a.m.

Homer, Kenai, Seward and Soldotna will all represent the peninsula.

The top returner on the girls side from the peninsula is Homer senior Autumn Daigle, who finished fourth overall in the two-day total last year. The top returning finisher for the boys was Soldotna senior Bradley Walters, who was fifth. SoHi senior Jack Harris was sixth.
