ASAA announces state brackets

The Alaska School Activities Association on Sunday announced the brackets for the Class 1A, 2A, 3A and 4A state basketball tournaments at the Alaska Airlines Center.

The Kenai Peninsula qualified four teams to the state tournament — the Cook Inlet Academy boys at Class 1A, the Ninilchik boys at Class 2A, and the Homer girls and Seward boys at Class 3A.

All of the brackets are eight teams, except for the 16-team bracket at Class 1A. The seeding for Class 1A and 2A is done by an ASAA seeding committee, while the seeding for Class 3A and 4A is done by an RPI formula.

The Cook Inlet boys drew the No. 4 seed and face No. 13 Aqqaluk on Wednesday, March 13, at 8 a.m. The two squads have not played this season.

Ninilchik, the two-time defending Class 2A state champion, was awarded the No. 6 seed and will face No. 3 Petersburg on Thursday, March 14, at 6:15 p.m. The two teams have not played this season.

The Homer girls earned the No. 5 seed and will face No. 4 Mt. Edgecumbe on Wednesday, March 20, at 8 a.m. The two teams have not played this season.

The Seward boys are the No. 6 seed and face No. 3 Grace Christian on Wednesday, March 20, at 7:45 p.m. The teams are both in the Peninsula Conference and are very familiar with each other.

The Grizzlies have won all three contests — 79-42 on Jan. 27, 54-46 on Feb. 27 and 50-40 in the Peninsula Conference title game Friday.
