Kenai Central junior Jayna Boonstra led the Kenai Peninsula at the opening day of the state ski meet Thursday at Birch Hill in Fairbanks.
Boonstra finished 14th in the 5-kilometer girls interval start freestyle race. The Kardinals skier finished the race at 16 minutes, 58 seconds, while Marit Flora, a Service senior, finished at 15:04 to take the girls victory.
Boonstra was the top Division II finisher in the race. Homer’s Ireland Styvar finished at 17:58 to take 23rd overall and second in Division II, while Kenai’s Emily Moss finished at 18:02 to take 30th overall and third in Division II. Soldotna’s Jordan Ruffner finished at 17:37 to take 21st overall.
For the boys, Kenai sophomore Jack Laker finished the 7.5K freestyle interval start in 23:36 to take 23rd overall and first in Division II. Service junior Aaron Power won at 21:05.
SoHi’s Quinn Cox was 33rd in 23:57, while Kenai’s Tyler Hippchen finished at 24:47 to take 41st overall and second in Division II, and Homer’s Jody Goodrich finished at 24:48 to take 42nd overall and third in Division II.
Both the Kenai girls and boys are the top Division II teams after the first day of competition.
For the boys, Service leads at 1:25:36, while Kenai is eighth at 1:39:56, Homer is 10th at 1:44:32 and Soldotna is 11th at 1:45:00. For the girls, Kenai is in sixth at 1:13:14, with West in the lead at 1:03:56. Soldotna in 11th at 1:17:27 and Homer in 13th at 1:24:03.
Also for the Kenai girls, Leah Fallon was 39th in 18:56, Summer Foster was 42nd in 19:16, Gabriella Tews was 56th in 20:19 and Madison McDonald was 71st in 21:24.
Also for the Kenai boys, Greg Fallon was 48th in 25:26, Ben Boersma was 56th in 26:06, Zane Tews was 62nd in 26:44 and George Wright was 90th in 30:18.
Also for the Soldotna girls, Jordan Strausbaugh was 37th in 18:34, Ariana Cannava was 41st in 19:10, Avery Cuifo was 75th in 22:04, Adele Tacey was 78th in 22:27 and Emmy Reese was 82nd in 22:41.
Also for the SoHi boys, Jonathan Gordon was 64th in 26:55, Andrew Cox was 67th in 27:00, Levi Mickelson was 70th in 27:07, Trenton Boots was 75th in 27:54 and Benjamin Able was 78th in 28:03.
Also for the Homer girls, Eryn Field was 66th in 21:02, Sienna Hardyman was 72nd in 21:39, Jaela Marchbanks was 84th in 23:28, Elena Badajos was 85th in 23:53 and Leah Dunn was 92nd in 26:42.
Also for the Homer boys, Seamus McDonough was 51st in 25:41, Garrett Briscoe was 55th in 26:06 and Leif Jaworski was 76th in 27:56.
For Seward, Aly Guernsey was 68th in 21:17 in the 5K, and Trevor Guernsey was 71st in 27:10 in the 7.5K.
State continues today with the boys 10K mass start classic at 11 a.m. and the girls 7.5K mass start classic at 2 p.m.
Saturday, the girls relay is at 11 a.m., and the boys relay is at 2 p.m.
