Cannava, Goodrich win Homer Skiathlon

Soldotna’s Ariana Cannava and Homer’s Jody Goodrich won the Homer Skiathlon on Friday at Ohlson Mountain just outside of Homer.

In the skiathlon, athletes started with a 5-kilometer skate that included an uphill that is 1K long. Skiers then took a brief run to their classic gear, then finished with 2.5K in that technique.

Cannava finished the skate loop at 15 minutes, 1 seconds, to create almost 40 seconds of gap on the field.

She won at 26:33, with Kenai’s Isla Crouse in second at 27:39 and Soldotna’s Kate Cox in third at 27:55. Crouse had trailed Cox by about 9 seconds after the first lap.

Also for the Kardinals in the top 10, Ruby Davis was fourth at 29:05 and Teresa Fallon was sixth in 29:27.

Homer put four in the top 10 — Cassidy Carroll in fifth at 29:16, Myra Kalafut in seventh at 29:42, Jaela Marchbanks in eighth at 30:54 and Etta Bynagle in 10th at 31:15.

Indigo Leslie has returned from injury and finished ninth for Seward in 31:11.

In the boys race, Goodrich finished the first lap in 12:21 to put 19 seconds on the rest of the field. He won at 21:09, with teammate Johannes Bynagle in second at 21:39.

Homer took six of the top eight — Leif Jaworski was fourth in 23:01, Tait Ostrom was fifth in 23:07, Charlie Rustand was seventh in 23:43 and Daniel Christ was eighth in 23:49.

Michael Davidson was third for SoHi in 22:00, while Noble Cassidy was ninth in 23:53.

In the top 10 for Kenai were Fletcher Darr in sixth at 23:14 and Levi Strong in 10th at 24:10.
