Kenai’s Travis Cooper opened up the 2019-20 World Cup biathlon season with a 108th-place finish Sunday in Oestersund, Sweden.
Johannes Thingnes Boe of Norway won the 10-kilometer race that incorporates nordic skiing and sharpshooting skills in 24 minutes, 18.3 seconds, while Cooper finished 5:38 behind.
Sunday’s 10K sprint race was the second race of the BMW IBU World Cup Biathlon season, but the first for Cooper, who didn’t race Saturday in the relay races.
Cooper, a 2015 Kenai Central grad, missed six total shots — three misses in both rounds of shooting. A penalty loop is assessed to each competitor for each miss.
Cooper had 10 World Cup starts last year with a best finish of 56th.
