Cory Davis of Soldotna and Ryan Simons of Alberta were in fifth place in the Iron Dog snowmachine race Monday night.
Davis, who is running the Iron Dog for the fifth time and is a six-time medalist at the X Games, was on a layover in Galena, which is 585 miles into the 2,000-mile race. Davis and Simons had arrived in Galena at 4:13 p.m. The leaders, Tyler Akelstad and Tyson Johnson, arrived at Kaltag, which is 680 miles into the race, at 4:59 p.m.
Also from the peninsula, Dusty VanMeter of Kasilof and Chad Gueco of Wasilla are in 10th place. They are on layover at Galena, arriving there at 5:56 p.m.
Matt Heilala of Soldotna and Stan James of Palmer scratched from the race Monday.
