Esports Week 7: In 2nd last week before playoffs, winter storm wipes out play for many area teams

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Kenai Central 1 — Eli Castro, Kaizen Fuller and Blake Gillis — took a 3-1 win over Sitka High School 3 on Wednesday. They’re 6-1 and second in the state with only one week left in the regular season.

Nikiski Middle-High School’s Lincoln and Levi Kimbell and Braden Brigham fell 3-1 to top-ranked and undefeated Lathrop High School. Nikiski is 5-2 and fourth in the state.

Kenai 2’s Vincent Hensley, Kai Adkins and Landon Dubber won 3-2 over Kodiak High School. They are 5-2 and fifth in the state, right behind Nikiski.

Kenai 3 topped Chief Ivan Blunka School 3-1 to climb to 5-2 and sixth.

Soldotna High School 2 won 3-1 over Gustavus School to climb to 4-3 and 11th, while SoHi 1 was swept by Service High School and are 3-4 and 17th.

Lathrop is the only team in Alaska Smash that has locked in its playoff berth. The remaining teams will be vying to secure their spots next week, the final week of the regular season.

Rocket League and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

Kenai and SoHi were scheduled to play games on Thursday for Rocket League and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, but games were postponed because of a closure of central Kenai Peninsula schools by the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District in response to a winter storm that dumped inches of snow and rain Wednesday night.

Before the accounting for Week 7 games which were played by other schools, in Rocket League, SoHi sits at eighth in the California Region and Kenai at 26th.

In Mario Kart, SoHi is third in the Coastal Region and has qualified for the playoffs. Kenai is fourth and hasn’t yet secured a berth. Nikiski is seventh.
