Hoops roundup: Kenai girls, boys finish 2nd at Joe T. Classic

The Kenai Central boys lost 59-36 to Monroe Catholic on Saturday at the Joe T. Classic at Lathrop in what amounted to the championship game of the round-robin tournament.

Kenai took second at the event, while Kodiak was third and Lathrop was fourth.

The Rams took a 19-4 lead after the first quarter. Gabe Silas had 15 points for Monroe, while Izak Lohrke, Isaac Garcia and Quinn McHenry each had 10. For the Kardinals, Andrew Bezdecny had 11 points, while Adam Trujillo had 10 points.

The Kenai boys came back in the fourth quarter for a 52-51 victory over Kodiak on Friday.

Kenai led 15-8 after a quarter, but Kodiak led 31-25 at the half. The Bears then led 43-33 after the third quarter before Kenai won the final quarter 19-8.

Trujillo led the Kards with 24 points, while Bezdecny had 12 points. Both were named to the all-tournament team. For Kodiak, Glenn Penamora had 21 points.

The Kardinals girls also finished second at the tournament. Lathrop, which defeated Kenai on Thursday, won the event, while Kodiak was third and Monroe was fourth.

In the Friday girls game, Jaycie Calvert hit eight 3-pointers for 24 points to lead the Kardinals to a 49-34 victory over Kodiak.

The game was tied after one quarter, but Kenai led 29-21 at halftime. Leslie Spear had 16 for Kodiak.

Saturday’s girls game saw Kenai notch a 46-34 victory over Monroe Catholic. Monroe had a 15-8 lead after a quarter, but Kenai had a 24-19 lead at halftime and a 35-22 lead after three quarters.

For Monroe, Grace Hodges had 18 points. Brooke Satathite had 12 points for Kenai, while Elizabeth Hanson added 11.

Calvert and Brooke Satathite were named to the all-tournament team.

Dean Cummings Memorial Tournament

The Seward boys defeated Unalaska 75-69 for third place at the tournament in Delta.

Unalaska led 27-22 after a quarter and 41-30 at halftime. Seward started to turn the tables by trailing 60-54 entering the final eight minutes, then dominated the fourth quarter 21-9.

Connor Spanos had 24 points for Seward, while Max Pfieffenberger had 12 and Sam Koster added 10. For Unalaska, Trevor Milson had 23, John Esnardo had 17, Dallas Lane had 12 and Alex Esnardo had 11.

Friday, the Seward boys dropped a 55-54 decision to Nome in the semifinals.

Pfieffenberger led the way for Seward with 13 points, while Spanos and John Moriarity each had 11. Gareth Hansen pumped in 38 points for Nome.

The Seward girls dropped the fourth-place game Saturday 59-37 to Bethel. For Bethel, Brianna Evan had 18 points. For Seward, Ashley Jackson had 12 and Riley Von Borstel added 11.

Friday, the Seward girls notched a 35-28 victory over North Pole to move to the fourth-place game.

O’Brady’s Invitational

The Homer boys dropped a 35-28 decision to Juneau-Douglas on Friday at the tournament at South High School to drop into Saturday’s seventh-place game. The result of that game against South JV was not available as the Clarion went to press.

Lumen Christi girls 30, Ninilchik 29

The visiting Archangels won the fourth quarter 6-2 en route to winning the game.

Lumen led 20-11 at halftime, but the Wolverines carried the lead into the fourth quarter after winning the third quarter 16-4.

Jaime Martin had 13 points for Lumen Christi, while Sophia Dupras added 11. Isabella Koch paced Ninilchik with 10.

Lumen Christi boys 68, Ninilchik 57

The visiting Archangels scored a Peninsula Conference victory over the Wolverines on Friday. Ninilchik had a 13-6 lead after the first quarter, but Lumen shifted the game by winning the third quarter 20-4.

For Lumen, Daniel Bennett and Shon Nagel each had 15, while Tim Bennett added 10. For Ninilchik, Garrett Koch had a game-high 29, while Cole Hadro added 11 points.
