Lydia Jacoby, a 2022 graduate of Seward High School, missed a chance to qualify for the Olympics in the 100-meter breaststroke Monday at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Indianapolis.
Jacoby, who won the gold medal in the 100 breaststroke in 2021 at the Summer Olympics in Tokyo, needed to finish in the top two in the 100 breaststroke race to all but lock up a spot in the Olympics in the event.
The winner of the event gets a spot in the Olympics. The second-place finisher usually makes the team, though the official roster is not announced until the end of the trials.
Jacoby, swimming for Seward Tsunami Swim Club, finished third. Lilly King was first in 1 minute, 5.43 seconds, Emma Weber was second in 1:06.10 and Jacoby was at 1:06.37. King has now won the 100 breaststroke at three Olympic Trials. She won a gold medal in the event in 2016.
Jacoby still has a shot to assure a spot in the Olympics in the 200 breaststroke.
According to swimswam.com, Jacoby is tied for fourth on the list of entrants in the event with a lifetime best of 2:24.03. Kate Douglass is tops at 2:19.30, while King is next at 2:19.92 and Alex Walsh is third at 2:22.87.
The women’s 200 breaststroke semifinals are Wednesday, while the women’s 200 breaststroke final is Thursday.
