Kenai’s Travis Cooper received big news Thursday from the U.S. national biathlon team.
Cooper was one of seven athletes — three from Alaska — that were selected to join the U.S. national development team. Two Eagle River biathletes, Grace Gilliland and Helen Wilson, were named to the junior development team, while Cooper was named to the senior team. Only four others were selected to the senior squad.
The 20-year-old biathlete graduated from Kenai Central in 2015 after a successful Nordic career with the Kardinals, which included a Region III championship his senior season. Cooper currently trains in the National Guard biathlon program in Vermont.
