The visiting Kenai Central girls soccer team moved to 3-0-0 in the Peninsula Conference and 7-0-0 overall with a 2-0 victory over Homer on Saturday. The Mariners are 1-2-0 and 3-4-0.
In the 48th minute, Kylee Verkuilen played the ball to Kori Moore, who crossed to Rylie Sparks for a goal. In the 72nd minute, Kate Wisnewski played an indirect kick to Verkuilen, who scored.
Maddie Malone had the shutout in goal for the Kardinals, but Kenai coach Dan Verkuilen said the defensive line of Wisnewski, Cali Holmes, Seanna Swanson and Grace Beiser did a great job of keeping the ball away from Malone.
When the ball got to the midfield, coach Verkuilen said Ella Yragui did a great job of distributing it.
Kenai boys 1, Homer 1
The visiting Kardinals and Mariners played to a tie Saturday in Peninsula Conference action, leaving Kenai at 1-0-2 in the league and 4-2-2 overall, and Homer 1-1-1 and 3-3-1.
Cole Langham put the Kardinals ahead in the first five minutes when he chipped it over Homer keeper Walden Kraszeski.
Late in the game, Owen Pitzman started a string of passes that resulted in a shot on goal by Lucas Story. Niko Sulczynski put in the rebound for the equalizer.
“Today was the definition of what this program is … we fight, we play together, we bring a battle,” Homer head coach Adam Diaz wrote in a text message, also thanking the Kards for coming down to play his team. “I am grateful to coach, I love it and these are my boys.”
